Welcome to my Science Communication homepage.

Latest News (updated 16 July 2008):
  • You can now preorder Quantum Aspects of Life , which is published this Autumn. This book presents the hotly debated question of whether quantum mechanics plays a non-trivial role in biology.
  • Currently, I am still in the middle of filming my new series for the BBC on Science and Islam. It is a 3-parter and due to be shown first on BBC4 early in 2009 hopefully. I am also writing a book on the same subject (but not a tie-in with the series!) which will be out at the end of next year. Filming has been fantastic and has taken me all over the Middle East. Particular highlights were Palmera in the Syrian desert, the Assassins' castle in the mountains of north west Iran and seeing the very last existing copy of the first printed Qur'an (the equivalent of the Gutenberg Bible) in a monastry in Venice. If you want to find out more on the subject matter, watch my Faraday lecture at the Royal Society (see below) or read the BBC Press Release.
  • Other forthcoming TV includes a Horizon documentary on the Big Bang, to be shown as part of the BBC's evening of programmes to coincide with the switching on of CERN's Large Hadron Collider later this summer. I also begin filming the sequal series to ATOM in a few months. It is called ELEMENTS and is all about chemistry.

To watch my recent Faraday lecture I delivered at the Royal Society on 30 January, go to the link below and click on the tab that says History of Science then click on my lecture title: The House of Wisdom and the Legacy of Arabic Science. (Lecture).

Watch the Surrey Debate The God Particle: Is Science the New Religion? on the British Council website.
